Day 314 Reading Schedule: John 18~19 John 18: Christ Arrested and Tried [Overview] Chapters 18 through 19 of the Gospel of John contain the account of Jesus's Passion. This chapter mainly emphasizes the arrest and interrogation of Jesus. John presupposes that Jesus' Passion and death are the time of his glory (see John 17:1), which is an important key to understanding the account of Jesus' Passion. In addition, John emphasizes Jesus' willingness to suffer and describes Pilate's interrogation in detail, which is a characteristic that can be compared to the Synoptic Gospels. This chapter consists of Jesus being arrested (verses 1-9), the ear of the horse being cut off (verses 10-11), Jesus standing before Annas (verses 12-14), Peter denying Jesus (verses 15-18), Annas’ interrogation (verses 19-24), Peter’s repeated denial (verses 25-27), and Pilate’s interrogation (verses 28-40). The motive for Jesus’ suffering, as mentioned in Jesus’ intercessory prayer, was that his suffering and death were for the glory of the Father. Therefore, Jesus’ ministry can be said to be a step toward such suffering and death.
John 19: The Suffering and Death of Christ [Summary] This chapter focuses on the death of Jesus. Jesus’ death on the cross was an essential gateway for the completion of God’s redemptive work. So, through the intercessory prayer in chapter 17, Jesus saw this time as the time when the Father and the Son would be glorified. This chapter, which contains such content, is composed of Pilate’s death sentence (verses 1-16), the Son of God being crucified (verses 17-30), and the burial of the Son of God (verses 31-42). What John wanted to reveal through this chapter was that all the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ death on the cross were completely under God’s control. |
