Day 230 Reading Schedule: 1 Chronicles 23-26

1 Chronicles 23: Establishment of the Levite System

[Content Overview]

David gave Solomon and the princes general instructions on building the temple on the battlefield. Next, in this chapter, he attempts to establish a solid foundation for the kingdom by establishing an organization to assist his son Solomon politically and religiously during his lifetime. This chapter, which specifically mentions the scene of dividing the work of the Levites who will serve in the temple, shows David gathering the Levites spread out across the country (verses 1-5) and dividing them into 24 classes according to their head families. (verses 6-23). And it describes the mission in the temple entrusted to them (verses 24-32). Even though this division of Levitical duties was done by David near his death, it was much more systematic and efficient than the Mosaic regulations. In this chapter, we can discover King David's zeal in thoroughly preparing to worship God.

1 Chronicles 24: Levites Divided into 24 Divisions

[Content Overview]

After David completed all external and internal preparations for the construction of the temple, he delegated the duties of temple service to the Levites for various functions of the temple. This chapter specifically mentions the priestly division and the patriarchs of the 24 divisions. Following the previous chapter that assigned the duties of the Levites, this chapter consists of the first half (verses 1-19), which mentions the ranks of the priests, and the second half (verses 20-31), which records the descendants of Levi who assist the priests, providing a closer look at the duties held by the Levites. It is covered in detail. In other words, the priests and general Levites are divided into different classes and classified in more detail. The purpose of classifying the Levites in this way was not to promote sectarianism within Israel, but to ensure that God's work was carried out very systematically and effectively.

1 Chronicles 25: Division of Singers

[Content Overview]

On the battlefield, David organized the order of the priests who would serve in the temple and the Levites who would assist them for the various functions of the temple that would be completed in the future. Next, in this chapter, the choir that will praise Jehovah in the temple is organized into 24 ranks and presents the correct form of faith that Israel should have toward God. In other words, David led the Israelites to a life of repentance and confession of faith to God by having the priests take on the task of offering sacrifices. For this purpose, the praise band is organized into 24 classes. The number and duties of the sons of Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman who made up the choir order are mentioned (verses 1-7), and the order of service determined by lot is indicated (verses 8-31). The difference between the two is that while there were no regulations for the praise band in Moses' tabernacle, David organized a praise band to serve in the temple.

1 Chronicles 26: Gatekeeper and Storekeeper

[Content Overview]

This chapter, unlike the duties of the Levites mentioned so far, mentions a position indirectly devoted to offering sacrifices to God. It records the 24 orders of gatekeepers (verses 1-19), the division of duties for temple storehouse managers (verses 20-28), and describes the judges and judges who performed duties outside the temple (verses 29-32). In these contents, we discover the thorough image of King David, who strives for perfection in serving God.
