Day 222 Reading schedule: Obadiah 1
Obadiah Chapter 1: Judgment of Edom and Restoration of Israel [Content Overview]
The Book of Obadas is the shortest book among the prophetic books of the Old Testament. God foretells judgment on the Edomites through this book. Edom was descended from Isaac's eldest son, Esau, and was virtually brothers with Israel. Nevertheless, it has traditionally maintained a hostile relationship with Israel. They have formed a powerful force with Mount Seir as their base. However, even though they knew God from the beginning, they did not serve God, but worshiped idols, and relied only on their strong military and economic power. That is why God declared judgment through the prophet (verses 1-9). Moreover, even though they were brothers with Israel, they persecuted Israel more than other countries, and even rejoiced when Israel was invaded by other countries and even plundered them together. God decided to judge them for this (verses 10-16). However, God's judgment on Edom is not just aimed at them, but to present the salvation of Israel, the chosen people. So the prophet speaks of the restoration of Israel along with the judgment of Edom (verses 17-21). |
