Day 351 Reading Schedule:: Hebrews 3-6
Hebrews 3: Jesus Christ, Superior to Moses [Summary]In this chapter, the writer of Hebrews emphasizes the greatness of Christ by comparing Moses and Christ. Moses was faithful as a servant of God's house, but Christ was faithful as a son of God's house (verses 1-6). Despite Moses' faithfulness and the many miracles he performed, he reminds us that Israel disobeyed God. He also urges the readers of Hebrews not to be tempted by the world and to stand firm in their faith in Christ until the end (verses 7-19).In this chapter, the writer of Hebrews deals with the superiority of Jesus Christ over Moses as the third argument for the superiority of Jesus Christ. Moses is a representative figure of the prophets and the most heroic figure to the Jewish people. The writer of Hebrews explains through various examples from the Old Testament that we must serve Jesus Christ, who is far superior to Moses.
Hebrews 4: God's Rest through Faith [Summary]God gave the promise of rest. Joshua led the Israelites to the promised land of Canaan, but it was not a true rest. The time of true rest still remains for God's people (verses 1-10). We must strive to enter into rest. The Word of God has the amazing power to change human character, making us believe and obey God's promise and making us realize our own ugliness (verses 11-13). Now, the writer of Hebrews declares Jesus as our great high priest and begins to develop the Christology of the high priest in earnest (verses 14-16).This chapter can be largely divided into two parts. The first part is an explanation of the rest promised by God (verses 1-13). The second part is an introduction to Chapter 5 and an explanation of the high priest Jesus Christ (verses 14-16). The author of Hebrews's logic is intended to confirm that we can enter the rest promised by God only by believing in Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 5: Jesus Christ, Superior to Aaron the High Priest [Summary]A priest is a representative of the people, chosen from among the people, and appointed by God. A priest offers a sacrifice of atonement for the people. However, since a priest is also a human being, he must also offer a sacrifice of atonement for himself. However, Jesus Christ, the high priest according to the order of Melchizedek, is superior to the high priests of the Old Testament and is a man of thorough obedience (verses 1-10). Before explaining Melchizedek, the writer of Hebrews emphasized the necessity of maturity in faith (verses 11-14).This chapter is about Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the office of the high priest. In the previous chapter, we examined the fact that Jesus Christ is our high priest. Now, in this chapter, the writer of Hebrews compares Aaron, the first high priest of Israel, and Jesus Christ, and proves that Christ is superior to Aaron.
Hebrews 6: Hold on to Your Faith [Summary]The author of Hebrews urges us not to remain in the weak beginner’s faith but to grow into mature believers. On the other hand, he warns us that apostates will inevitably meet a miserable end (verses 1-8). After giving a dire warning to apostates, the author of Hebrews gives his readers warm words of comfort that they are near salvation and encourages them to persevere in hope (verses 9-12). The author of Hebrews cites Abraham as an example of hope and perseverance. He also reminds us once again that Jesus became a high priest forever in the order of Deutchizedek (verses 13-20).This chapter continues to mention the religious exhortations mentioned in the latter half of the previous chapter. The author of Hebrews urges us to abandon the elementary teachings of Christ for spiritual growth and progress. He goes further to warn us about the end of apostates who fail to grow in their faith and are deceived by empty teachings. At the same time, he urged them not to be lazy but to be patient and keep their faith strong.
