2 Chronicles 8: Solomon's Reign over Israel

[Overview]

This chapter records the glorious achievements of King Solomon, including strengthening the domestic organization and expanding the territory. It records the construction of Solomon's city (verses 1-2), Solomon's construction project (verses 3-6), Solomon's military force (verses 7-10), and the sacred City of David (verse 11). In addition, the three major feasts observed are mentioned (verses 12-13), the organization of the priesthood (verses 14-15), the completion of the temple (verse 16), and the gold of Ophir (verses 17-18). In this way, various achievements are recorded in this short chapter.  The author of Chronicles records that Solomon followed the ordinances of his father David, and also that he promoted the revival movement of faith as agreed upon every day, following the 'commandment of Moses'. Therefore, through this chapter, the author of this book once again highlights the priestly perspective. In addition, he shows a good example that religious traditions based on the Word must be preserved.

2 Chronicles 9: Solomon's fame and wealth

[Overview]

This chapter records the end of Solomon's reign, mentioning the wealth and power he enjoyed, as well as his death. If we divide this chapter in terms of content, the visit of the Queen of Sheba is recorded, and Solomon's outstanding wisdom and honor, which were powerful even in the external world at the time, are highlighted as themes (verses 1-12), and gold, gifts, and military supplies are presented as new examples of the wealth and prosperity of Solomon's dynasty (verses 13-28).  Finally, the death of Solomon and the ascension of his son Rehoboam are recorded (verses 29-31). This shows that the death of Solomon, the greatest king, was the prelude to the division into the northern and southern dynasties that would unfold later. The uniqueness of this chapter is that Solomon's wisdom, wealth, and worship are praised by the kings of the nations. And through this, the glory of Yahweh is proclaimed to the entire universe.
