Day 213 Today's Reading Schedule: Jeremiah 34-36
Jeremiah 34: Prophecy about the king and the people [Content Overview] This chapter focuses on the actual situation of the ‘fall of Jerusalem.’ Jeremiah announces the fall of Judah and the captivity and death of Zedekiah just before the fall of Jerusalem, foreshadowing the terrible fate that will be given to the princes and people who have abandoned the covenant. By doing this, the author is trying to accurately recognize the situation facing the people of Judah, who are still not giving up false hope even in a realistic crisis situation. This chapter consists of the first half (verses 1-7), which mentions the prophecy about King Zedekiah, and the second half (verses 8-22), which declares warning prophecies about the people of Judah. In a situation of great national crisis, a movement of repentance among the princes and people of Judah arose, but it was not true repentance, but a false repentance carried out as a cunning appeasement with the intention of appeasing God's wrath. This act of deception is a direct challenge to God’s covenant. Jeremiah 35: Rechabites and Judahites [Content Overview] This chapter contrasts the rebelliousness and disobedience of the people of Judah by using the example of the Rechabite, who were not descendants of Abraham but had a faithful faith. This tribe, also called the Kenites, was living a nomadic life in the plains of Judah at the time and was living in Jerusalem to avoid the threat of Babylon. However, according to the orders of their ancestor Jonadab, they abstained from alcohol and lived in tents, so they resolutely refused Jeremiah's invitation to drink wine. God blesses this attitude and, in contrast, harshly criticizes Judah's apostate behavior in rejecting the law. This chapter is composed of the faithfulness of the Rechabites (verses 1-11), the example of the Rechabites (verses 12-17), and the reward for the faithfulness of the Rechabites (verses 18-19).
Jeremiah 36: Prophecy written on a scroll [Content Overview] This chapter records the events from the time when Jeremiah was called as a prophet according to God's command in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, when he recorded and read all the prophecies he had declared on a scroll through the scribe Baruch. When judgment was declared through the scroll, the king of Judah reacted negatively and even burned the scroll. In response, the prophet wrote a new scroll and declared disaster to come upon King Jehoiakim.
