Day 238 Reading Schedule: 2 Chronicles 23-25

2 Chronicles 23: The Revolutionary Movement of Jehoiada the Priest [Contents Overview] This chapter records the end of Athaliah's six-year reign by the revolution of Jehoiada and the enthronement of Joash, the first king of Judah. The plan of Jehoiada the priest is recorded (vv. 1-7), followed by its execution (vv. 8-11), the execution of Athaliah (vv. 12-15), and the enthronement of Joash (vv. 16-21). This chapter reveals the end of wickedness and the flow of Jehovah's direction of history. It also foreshadows the event of Christ's resurrection, which broke the power of death.

2 Chronicles 24: The Election and Fall of King Joash [Overview] King Joash, who ascended to the throne through Jehoiada's revolution, was favored by God, unlike the previous kings who had done evil, but he also committed evil in his later years and was judged by God. This chapter records the life of King Joash. It records Joash's election (vv. 1-3), Joash's order to repair the temple (vv. 4-7), the offerings that paid for the repairs (vv. 8-11), and an account of the repairs (vv. 12-14). Thus, the first half of Joash's reign is characterised by favour, but after Jehoiada's death (vv. 15-16), the book records Joash's idolatry (vv. 17-19), Zechariah's rebuke and death (vv. 20-22), the Aramean invasion and Joash's death (vv. 23-27). In other words, after Jehoiada's death, idolatry resumed in the latter part of Joash's reign.

2 Chronicles 25: The Victory and Defeat of Amaziah [Overview] This chapter records the selection of Amaziah, the son of Joash, as the ninth king of Judah and his reign. The reign of Amaziah is recorded by the author in two parts, following the same typical narrative style as the reign of Joash. The first half of the book is the selection of Amaziah and his conquest of Edom (vv. 1-13); the second half is Amaziah's idolatry (vv. 14-16), Amaziah's dealings with Israel (vv. 17-24), and Amaziah's end (vv. 25-28). The cause of Amaziah's transgressions was his pride after his victory in the war against Edom.
