Day 308 Reading Schedule: John 4~6 November 2024 Bible Reading 308th John 4: Jesus' Gospel Testimony [Overview] This chapter deals with the teachings and signs Jesus gave during his journey from Judea to Samaria and Galilee. In particular, the teachings included in this chapter are Jesus' second discourse centered around the conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman, revealing the principles of self-revelation and invitation. The reason Jesus chose this journey was, first, to avoid a reckless clash with his enemies before God's appointed time, and second, to save the marginalized. In doing so, he highlighted God's grace and the universality of the gospel. This chapter is composed of Jacob's well in Sychar (vv. 1-6), the woman at the well (vv. 7-15), the nature of true worship (vv. 16-26), the testimony of the Samaritan woman (vv. 27-30), the true food (vv. 31-38), the testimony to the Samaritans (vv. 39-42), the beginning of the ministry in Galilee (vv. 43-45), and the second sign, the raising of the servant's son (vv. 46-54).
John 5: Testimony of the Son of God [Overview] This chapter is a sign of healing a man who had been sick for 35 years and a reinforcement of Jesus' own divinity, and the theme of Jesus being the Son of God, which is consistently highlighted throughout the book, is emphasized. In particular, the spatial background of Jesus' ministry suddenly changes to Jerusalem in this chapter. The Synoptic Gospels describe in detail the various acts of Jesus in Galilee that occurred between this chapter and the previous chapter, but this book boldly omits all of these stories and goes straight to the ministry of Jesus in Jerusalem. In other words, John made this leap because he considered the ministry in Jerusalem more important than the ministry in Galilee. This chapter is composed of the third sign, the healing of a man who had been sick for 38 years (vv. 1-9), the intensification of persecution by the Jews (vv. 10-18), the authority of the Son (vv. 19-21), the authority to judge (vv. 22-30), the testimony of Jesus (vv. 31-39), and the rebuke of those who rejected Jesus (vv. 40-47). From this chapter on, Jesus has been proving his own divinity in the midst of arguments with the Jews. John 6: Christ, the Bread of Life [Summary] This chapter records the actions of Jesus, who temporarily left Jerusalem and went to Galilee to avoid the signs of a full-scale conflict due to the argument with the Jews on the battlefield. This chapter consists of two signs and reinforcements based on those signs: the miracle of the five loaves and two fish and the miracle of walking on the sea. In order to understand this well, we must focus on Jesus' official self-declaration and the disciples' reactions behind these signs. Although Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament and the Messiah that Israel had been waiting for, he was not a Messiah who satisfied Israel's nationalistic fanaticism. Therefore, Jesus refused to reign as the king of the Israelites. This chapter is composed of the fourth sign, the miracle of the five loaves and two fish (vv. 1-15), the fifth sign, walking on the water (vv. 16-21), the crowds seeking Jesus (vv. 22-24), the bread of life (vv. 25-40), the bread coming down from heaven (vv. 41-51), the teaching about the Son of Man's body and blood (vv. 52-59), the disciples' defense (vv. 60-65), and Peter's confession of faith (vv. 66-71). |
