Day 307  Reading Schedule: John 1~3

John 1: Incarnate Christ

[Overview]

This chapter is the introduction to the entire Gospel of John. While the contents of the Synoptic Gospels are objective biographies, this book contains subjective commentary on Jesus. This characteristic is well expressed in this chapter. Theologically, the concept of Logos appears, and life also begins to be highlighted. Regarding the image of Jesus, it is highlighted as 'one son'. This chapter is composed of the following contents: Jesus, the Word itself (verses 1-4), John the Baptist, the witness (verses 6-8), Jesus, the true light (verses 9-13), the incarnation of the Word (verses 14-18), the testimony of John the Baptist (verses 19-28), the Lamb of God (verses 29-34), the first disciples (verses 35-42), and Philip and Nathanael (verses 43-51).

John 2: The Signs of Christ

[Overview]

This chapter records Jesus, the Son of God, who performs signs. This chapter is a continuation of the theme of the previous chapter, but it is characterized by Jesus directly proving himself through signs and deeds. In the previous chapter, the divinity of Christ was proven through John the Baptist and his disciples, but in reality, Jesus did not need to be proven by the mouths of people. The signs of this chapter should be understood in that context. In particular, it is the same context in which the numerous miracles in the Synoptic Gospels are understood in terms of the power that supports the authority of Jesus’ words and teachings. However, the response of the disciples and the Jewish leaders to these signs were different. We must keep in mind that there were groups that challenged Jesus’ divinity from the beginning of his public ministry. This chapter consists of the first sign in Cana, turning water into wine (verses 1-12), and the cleansing of the temple as a teacher with heavenly authority (verses 13-25).

John 3: Christ, the Eternal Life

[Summary]

This chapter records the conversation between Nicodemus, who came to Jesus Christ at night, and Jesus. This is the first of the seven major discourses of Jesus Christ included in this book. This discourse reveals that the kingdom of God and rebirth are inseparable and inseparable. This chapter is composed of the teaching of the new birth (verses 1-8), Jesus' self-witness (verses 9-15), eternal life through faith (verses 16-21), the final testimony of John the Baptist (verses 22-30), and the testimony of Jesus, the Son of God (verses 31-36).
