Day 311 Reading Schedule: John 12~13 John 12: Faith and Disbelief in Jesus [Summary] This chapter records the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. Jesus' ministry up to this point can be summarized in one word: Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah sent by God, and the One who gives eternal life to the world. Now that it is 'that time' for Jesus to fulfill his mission from God through suffering and death, he enters Jerusalem. In this chapter, John intentionally intends to show that the ministry of Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament. The fact that the Word of God prophesied thousands of years ago has finally been fulfilled reveals that Jesus Christ's existence and ministry are the Messiah with absolute divine authority. This chapter consists of Mary pouring perfume (1-8), the plot to kill Lazarus (9-11), the entry into Jerusalem (12-19), a grain of wheat (20-26), the prediction of his own death (27-36), the stubborn Jews (37-43), and the exhortation to believe in Jesus as the light (44-50).
John 13: Christ, the Model of the New Commandment [Summary] This chapter records Jesus having the Last Supper with his disciples. Despite his imminent death on the cross, Jesus gives his disciples a final word of exhortation and strives to fulfill God's will. This chapter is composed of Jesus washing the disciples' feet (verses 1-11), the example of service (verses 12-20), the prediction of Judas' betrayal (verses 21-30), the new commandment to love one another (verses 31-35), and the prediction of Peter's denial (verses 36-38). This chapter contains the betrayal that is not found in the Synoptic Gospels, namely, Jesus washing the disciples' feet and teaching them about the way of service. |
