Luke 11: Lessons on Prayer

[Overview]

Because the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, Jesus taught them the Lord’s Prayer (verses 1-4). Then, he taught them the posture of prayer by telling them a parable that his friend insisted on (verses 5-13). Among those who saw Jesus cast out a dumb demon, some criticized Jesus, saying that he cast out demons by borrowing the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, but Jesus asked back, “How can the prince of demons cast out demons when it is natural for a family to be divided against itself?” (verses 14-26). When the crowd gathered, Jesus said that he could only show this wicked generation the sign of Jonah (verses 27-32). He also told the parable of the lamp (verses 33-36). When a Pharisee invited Jesus to dinner and found it strange that Jesus ate without washing his hands, Jesus taught that it is more important for a person to have a pure heart (vv. 37-44). When a lawyer objected to this, Jesus rebuked the lawyers for making people's burdens heavier (vv. 45-54).

Luke 12: Preaching the Kingdom of God

[Summary]

Jesus gave his disciples a lesson. The content was to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, not to fear any persecution, and to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit even if they were arrested by the authorities (vv. 1-12). Jesus taught the importance of spiritual things by telling the parable of the rich fool to a person who came to him about an inheritance problem (vv. 13-21). Jesus presented the life of a true disciple by teaching his disciples about food, clothing, and shelter (vv. 22-35). He then tells the parable of the servant waiting for his master, teaching us about the second coming of the Son of Man at an unexpected time (vv. 36-40). When Peter asked Jesus why he was telling these parables, Jesus told the disciples the parable of the good steward and the bad steward, emphasizing their faithfulness in their assigned tasks (vv. 41-48), and encouraged them to prepare for the coming suffering (vv. 49-53). He also emphasized to the crowds that they should discern the signs of the times and prepare for the end times (vv. 54-59).

Luke 13: Urging Repentance

[Summary]

When a few people asked about the unjust deaths, Jesus explained them using the incident at the tower of Siloam as an example (vv. 1-5). He also told them the parable of the fig tree (vv. 6-9). He also healed a woman who had been demon-possessed for eighteen years on the Sabbath (vv. 10-17), and he told the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the yeast about the kingdom of God (vv. 18-20). He answered questions about salvation during his trip to Jerusalem (vv. 21-30). When Jesus heard from some Pharisees that Herod was plotting to arrest him, he proclaimed his messianic ministry and mourned for Jerusalem (vv. 31-35).
